Windsurf equipment discussion often centers around boards: which brand name, how early they plane, handle, jibe, etc
Little is discussed regarding fins. This is akin to discussing a jet fuselage without mentioning wings.
There are lots of great boards. It is important to select a good fin whether your board is brand-new or ten years old. Correct fin selection will enhance your sailing
The board with the best fin will sail the best. The more upright fins CR series work better for ALL sailors in lighter winds, staying planing and hooked in and you will have more jibing opportunity
This means better speed and better jibes, and most important, MORE FUN
1)Boards will plane earlier if you select a bigger fin. For mid-range, use a slightly smaller fin
2)If the board is unstable at cruising speeds or spins out (assuming it is positioned correctly and fastened securely in the box), your fin might be the problem, either from poor design or wrong sizing
3)Change fins as the wind changes. A fin quiver of fins will extend the range of your board. You can plane earlier, cruise smoother, and quiet the board significantly as it gets windier by changing the fin
4)As it get windier, even in high winds and waves or in weeds, the same principles apply. The difference is fin size gets smaller with more rake angle and curve in the outline as the wind picks up For each board: One fin to plane, one fin to cruise, one fin to rip The board is important (good boards: $1095 to $2500), quiver to $7,500 The Sail and Rig are important too (good rigs $900 to $2,000), quiver to $6,000
The fin is just as important (good fins: $120 to $150), quiver $600 to $1100+. Most are C-13 Carbon Composite. Freeride, Bump & Jump and Surf fins are mostly offered in unique colors and finished G-10
